It was excellent, served with a smear of truffled potato purée brightened with a drizzle of persillade. It’s the sole prime cut served at the restaurants (the rest is Certified Angus Beef, which must be either prime or choice, the second tier on the USDA scale). A sweet corn au jus made a delicate sauce a tangle of tender greens topped it.įor dinner, the New York strip was an easy choice.

Not that you can go there, no more than I can, unless you’re a VIP or you meet up with someone who is. There’s a little music in the background, but the bustle and bells are shut out. There are a few tables, a big-screen TV, couches - and quiet.

Soon one of the men invited us to join him in the VIP Lounge on our way to dinner, where drinks are free and made to order and a small buffet offers shrimp, fruit, cheese and crackers and so on. When we said sure, that we were leaving soon for dinner, we struck up a conversation about that universal uniter - food. As we lingered on a couch waiting for dinnertime to arrive, a trio asked if they could join the chairs grouped around us.
We sipped wine and enjoyed the Bold Ten Man, a refreshing though potent cocktail prepared with B&B, Baker’s bourbon, orange juice and Sierra Mist.
The surprise is that you will get used to it, and before you know it, the smell will be gone. It’s smoky, and it’s going to take you a while to get used to it if you’re not used to being around smokers. Get over that if you’re headed to Tunica. In Tennessee, where smoking is banned in most restaurants, we’re soft, spoiled by clean air. The restaurants and the bar are accessed through the casino, so be prepared for the smoke assault. Sitting in the Ten10 Lounge, just inside the casino entrance but isolated enough to mute the noise a bit, it was easy to fall into the groove of people-watching and hoping that the nearby slot players would hit a jackpot when they pulled. “We always do,” he said with a shake of his head. I played along, said that it was, but that I’d be leaving it when I left. On the elevator ride to our room on the 29th floor (while it no longer holds the record, the hotel was the tallest building in the state of Mississippi when it was built in 1997), an older man with a cocktail in his hand joined us and inquired about my suitcase: Their fun can be infectious, even for those of us who won’t so much as drop a quarter in a slot machine. There was no reason to do that - the mistake was mine - but it set a nice tone for our recent overnight visit to Gold Strike Casino, where we started at the bar, ate dinner at the Chicago Steakhouse, found ourselves in the VIP Lounge (more on that), and finished off with a buffet brunch the next morning. I accidentally ordered a glass of riesling from the iPad menu, realized my mistake when I tasted it, and was served the glass of Conundrum I intended to order, $5 pricier, at the riesling price. Say this for the Ten10 Lounge at Gold Strike Casino Resort in Tunica: They’ll mix up a stiff drink and serve a glass of wine that’s about double the customary 5- to 6-ounce pour.
